To review a disc as “ American Porn Songs ” is really much difficult because at first listening it is not easy to assimilate. I do not know the reason for which Eric Powell has decided to do a denser disc when 16 Volt has always characterized it by the anger that it prints on his tracks, in some moment he was called the Midas king of the industrial music, but it seems that the king is losing his touch, I've never been against the evolution, everything opposite, but simply after several listened to the only thing that melodies are a meeting of repetitive and slow industrial metal, except his honorable exceptions. Even before doing a judgment of this album, I have to confess that I looked in Internet for other critiques to know if i was not the only one that had not understood the new concept of 16 Volt of whom I am a fan from his beginnings, and for my surprise I discover that apparently almost nobody is dared even to establishing a judgment concerning to the new album, only Side-Line and Re:Gen Magazine in addition to the “Vampirefreaks“ site have done comments, Re:Gen are the only ones that they say that the disc is spectacular but they don't say why?, Side-Line mentions only a pair of tracks, casually the more savages and some of the calmest, he ends up by saying that 16 volt is one band that it is always necessary to remember and gives him 8 while vampirefreaks only it limits to giving the alignment and saying that it is a raw and dark disc, but in a very personal opinion, i believes that none of these critiques is completely sincere and that only tried to stay well with the artist and with the label, although every one is free to say what he thinks and very respectable, it is for which I will express my opinion of a very brief way.
What nobody has said is what Eric is presenting
on this album really, in my very personal opinion, which Powell treated of doing was a species of tribute to the Grunge of the 90, which genre could been more American than the Grunge and what musical stars and who of them has been more seduced by the sex and the drugs that those in the grunge?... “ American Porns songs ” can be a simple name or the real concept of the disc and related to what I mention. This disc once listen to it he is going to remember you in every moment to the first Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Filter and The Screaming Trees but all of them in one more metal version. Also he keeps on finding great influence of Nine Inch Nails, but on which disc not, but by chance the 90 were Grunge, I believe that the coincidence is already great, it is that to put a lot of attention to the refining of the guitars and you'll realize that it is truth what I say, that's the reason why I did not understand the album because at all times I tried to find the classic 16 Volt sound for all sides.
From this disc I will emphasize especially the tracks that continue
the typical vein: "American Porn songs”, "Useless people”, "Enjoy the pain”, “Somebody to hate” (who remembers a little bit to ministry), and the excellent, the incredible “To hell”, the best of the album, on the other hand in the calmest vein it is that to mention smash hits as “With fire and burning”, “Become your none” (with a sampler of the NIN's "Pinion"), and why not?, the grungier “Blackbird“ that might give us an idea of how would have been sound Nirvana if they had ended up playing industrial. If you are going to buy this disc hope to find not even " Supercoolnothing “ Pt 2 not “ Full black habit ” pt 2, but you will spend yourself hours and hours trying to remember what sounds to you. The production is incredible, the music of excellent given quality by the scale of artists invited with this disc is provided, but frankly I just hope that the following disc should be better
